[책] Young Goodman Brown - Nathaniel Hawthorne

한 친구가 읽어봤다길래 나도 읽게 된 책이다. 나타니엘 호쏜의 단편 영 굿맨 브라운. 

오래된 책이라 그런지 (1835년) 무료로 전자책을 받아서 볼 수 있다. 내가 받아서 본 곳은 feedbooks라는 곳. (http://www.feedbooks.com) 거기서 public domain으로 들어가면 무료 전자책을 볼 수 있다. 영어책 뿐 아니라 불어나 독일어 책도 있다.

feedbooks에 가면 전자책을 내려받을 수 있다.

처음엔 그냥 전화기로 읽다가 좀 제대로 읽자는 마음에 그 동안 한쪽 구석에 놔두었던 전자책 단말기 북큐브를 찾아서 옮겨두었다. 확실히 북큐브로 읽으니 눈도 편하고 책 읽는 느낌도 더 났다. 터치도 안 되고 와이파이도 안 되는 구식이지만 그래도 읽기에 큰 불편은 없다.

미국 동부지역을 배경으로 하고 있고, 종교적인 색채가 강하다. 선한 삶이란 어떤 것인가에 대한 고민이 담겨있는 단편.

짧다고는 해도 막상 읽으려니 이해도 잘 안 되고 주제가 뭔지 파악도 안 됐었다. Goodman Brown이 한 노인과 숲속 길을 걸어갔다는 건 알겠는데 그게 뭐 어떻다는 건지...

친구의 설명을 듣고 다시 읽어보니 좀 이해가 되었다. Goodman은 세상 어딘가에 숨겨져있던 악의 모습을 살펴보기 위해 여행을 떠나는데, 거룩하리라고 믿고있던 자신의 아버지, 할아버지, 성직자, 집사 등 모두 악한 일에 동참했었고 그것을 Brown도 알게 된다. 심지어 순수하고 정결하리라고 믿었던 자신의 아내 Faith 조차도 악에 동참하는 것을 목격하게 되고 그러면서 그 악을 찾는 여행의 악몽에서 깨어나게 된다. 그 이후로 계속 괴로워하며 살았다는 이야기.

With this excellent resolve for the future, Goodman Brown felt himself justified in making more haste on his present evil purpose. 

"That old woman taught me my catechism," said the young man; and there was a world of meaning in this simple comment.

"With heaven above and Faith below, I will yet stand firm against the devil!" cried Goodman Brown.

"My Faith is gone!" cried he, after one stupefied moment. "There is no good on earth; and sin is but a name. Come, devil; for to thee is this world given."

"... This night it shall be granted you to know their secret deeds: how hoary-bearded elders of the church have whispered wanton words to the young maids of their households; how many a woman, eager for widows' weeds, has given her husband a drink at bedtime and let him sleep his last sleep in her bosom; how beardless youths have made haste to inherit their fathers' wealth; and how fair damsels - blush not, sweet ones - have dug little graves in the garden, and bidden me, the sole guest to an infant's funeral. ..."

"Faith! Faith!" cried the husband, "look up to heaven, and resist the wicked one."

Whether Faith obeyed he know not.

And when he had lived long, and was borne to his grave a hoary corpse, followed by Faith, an aged woman, and children and grandchildren, a goodly procession, besides neighbors not a few, they carved no hopeful verse upon his tombstone, for his dying hour was gloom.

모든 사람은 악한 본성이 있다는 걸 너무나 당연하게 받아들이고 있는 지금의 나로서는 Goodman Brown이 선할 것이라 믿었던 사람들의 악한 모습을 발견하고 괴로워하는 것이 잘 이해가 되진 않는다. 처음 쓰여졌던 1835년 쯤에는 그래도 누군가는 성자일 거라는 믿음이 당연한 것이었는지도 모르겠다.

여전히 잘 이해못하겠는 부분도 있지만, 고전 한 편을 읽었다는 것에 만족.
