IELTS writing: Checklists (General Training Module)

Information of the IELTS book

Title: Focusing on IELTS: Reading and writing skills, 2nd Ed.

Authors: Jeremy Lindeck, Jannette Greenwood, and Kerry O'Sullivan

Publisher: MacMillan

There are checklists provided by the book, so I made a note here.

General Training Task 1 checklist

1. Task achievement

- Have you covered all three bullet points in the questions?

- Have you used the correct tone in your letter? For example, the language you use will be different if you are writing to a friend or writing to your manager at work.

2. Coherence and cohesion (organising your ideas logically)

- Does your letter follow a logical order?

- Have you used linking words to join your sentences?

- Have you substituted nouns with pronouns and used relative clauses?

3. Lexical resource (using appropriate vocabulary)

- Have you used a wide range of task-related vocabulary?

- Have you used the vocabulary correctly?

- Have you shown evidence of a good (wide range of) vocabulary?

4. Grammatical range and accuracy

- Have you used a wide range of grammatical structures?

- Have you used them correctly?

General Training (and Academic) Task 2 checklist

1. Task response

- Have you answered all parts of the question?

- Have you given an opinion?

2. Coherence and cohesion (Organising your ideas logically)

- Have you divided your response into paragraphs?

- Have you used linking words to join your sentences together?

- Have you paraphrased key words?

- Have you used a mix of complex, compound and simple sentences?

3. Lexical resource (Using appropriate vocabulary)

- Have you used a wide range of task-related vocabulary?

- Have you used the vocabulary correctly?

- Have you shown evidence of a wide range of vocabulary?

4. Grammatical range and accuracy

- Have you used a wide range of grammatical structures?

- Have you used them correctly?

In practice, it is not possible to check those lists when you write the answers on the actual IELTS test. Therefore, you need to practice to fluently apply these aspects on your answers.
